Poker & 3 Card Poker
Poker is perhaps the most popular card game known to large numbers of people all around the world. Poker is the game that people gather around a table for with their families, their friends, their coworkers, their neighbors; you name it, they play it. 3 Card Poker is a variant of the original Poker game; a variant which actually traces its recent origins to a British game called Brag. Only when the game migrated across the Atlantic and found its place in American casinos was it rechristened as 3 Card Poker. 3 Card Poker can be found at multiple casinos and is an increasingly popular type of Poker among online players. Those not overly familiar with 3 Card Poker should know a few basic 3 Card Poker terms before even beginning to play.
Basic 3 Card Poker Terms
1. Pair Plus: Pair Plus is one of the two possible 3 Card Poker plays. In this play, the player is not trying to best the dealer nor another player; rather, Pair Plus is about coming out with the best possible hand that you are able. Players choose the coins for their bet and then are dealt three cards. The dealer also receives three cards but these are virtually irrelevant. In order to win at Pair Plus, the player must receive a hand better than a pair. A pair pays out even money, whereas better hands garner better payouts.
2. Ante-and-play: In an ante-and-play version of 3 Card Poker, the player participates in a competitive game against the dealer. The player selects the coins and places a bet and then clicks on the deal button. This gets the player three cards dealt from the deck. You can see your cards, but you cannot see the cards dealt to the dealer. The player now decides whether to fold or to play; if you fold, you lose your ante bet. If you play, you add a play bet equal to your ante bet. The player and the dealer then compare cards. The dealer needs at least a Queen-high hand in order to win the play; otherwise, the player wins. If the dealer's hand is good enough, however, your hand will be compared against the dealer's hand. If you win, then you will receive even money on both bets. If the dealer wins, then the player loses both bets.
3. The best hands in ante-and-play, listed from best to least:
Straight flush
Three-of-a-kind
Straight
Flush
Pair
High card
Here are a few other important 3 Card Poker terms:
1. Qualifying hand: this is the hand that the dealer must get, the Queen-high or better, in order to qualify for ante-and-play rounds. If the dealer does not have a qualifying hand, then the player wins.
2. Ante bonus: In ante-and-play, if the player receives a straight flush, three-of-a-kind or straight, the player is automatically granted an Ante bonus. The dealer's hand does not matter.
3. Flush: Three cards of the same suit.
4. Pair: Two cards of the same denomination.
5. Straight flush: Three cards of the same suit, sequenced.
6. Three of a kind: Three cards of the same denomination.
